Strained muscles usually feel sore, tight, or achy. Back pain that is due to a muscle injury is often localized and modifiable with various postures and positions. Pain attributed to spinal nerve irritation is frequently reported as an intense electrical shock or a burning sensation. Nerve compression can also cause numbness and tingling in the involved extremity. Symptoms of nerve compression and irritation can occur with or without back pain.
